Thousands of Colombian families forced from their homes by violent conflict have settled in and around Bogota, the country's capital and largest city. This mass displacement has led to even more rapid urban sprawl that's swallowed up wetlands, waterways and woodlands.

Why Help Is Needed

The growth of Bogotá’s urban slums — and loss of critical natural resources — is causing numerous environmental and social problems. Loss of vegetation is destabilizing the soil and increasing carbon emissions. Families and their homes are also more prone to the threat of erosion, flooding and landslides.

Mercy Corps In Action

Mercy Corps’ Community Forestry Project is focusing on planting and managing trees in public areas and private yards, helping beautify neighborhoods, prevent environmental degradation and curb pollution. These activities also help increase the absorption of greenhouse gases. This Mercy Kit provides 10 tree seedlings to be planted by Colombian youth.
