On the path to a thriving future, women lead the way! This International Women’s Day, I want to share the inspiring story of a woman I just met in Colombia as part of my service on Mercy Corps’ Board of Directors.
Leaving her home in Venezuela, Tomasa arrived in Colombia with only a suitcase. Through a Mercy Corps program, she received a grant to open a food shop in front of her home. Tomasa’s children are more than supportive of their mom, wanting to expand and franchise her business in Colombia or even back in Venezuela.
Women like Tomasa are proving that possibility grows with equitable, lasting solutions. Let’s continue to #InspireInclusion

On the path to a thriving future, women lead the way! This International Women’s Day, I want to share the inspiring story of a woman I just met in Colombia as part of my service on Mercy Corps’ Board of Directors.
After being diagnosed with cancer, Gladys left Venezuela to find better healthcare. Getting involved with a Mercy Corps program, she and others have connected with legal, health, and psychosocial services while opening new opportunities they envision for themselves. With a grant from the program, Gladys is now running an ice cream business out of her apartment.
