Clean water and sanitation are human rights

Somalia
In Somalia, Mercy Corps recently established water pipelines in camps for displaced people who have fled their homes to seek safety from violent conflict in the region.

Access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) saves lives and changes futures. It’s an essential building block for safe, healthy, thriving communities.

And yet, while the international community recognizes WASH as a human right, it is out of reach for so many. Did you know 1 in 3 people do not have access to drinking water? Two billion people are without toilets or latrines? And 2 in 5 people lack access to basic hand-washing facilities?

Take Mercy Corps’ pledge and join our global community of humanitarians to affirm that every human has the right to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Mercy Corps is implementing 49 WASH programs in 22 countries. We work with local communities to improve access to safe, sustainable, and affordable water supply and sanitation services. Join us in affirming that everyone has the right to these vital resources.
