Volcanic activity in DRC forces hundreds of thousands to flee; major emergency response anticipated
The Mt. Nyiragongo volcano in Goma erupted without warning, causing red skies, earthquakes, and streams of lava pouring into some neighborhoods – and forcing thousands of people from their homes.
With local authorities anticipating further volcanic activity and evacuating hundreds of thousands of residents, Mercy Corps is preparing for what could be a major emergency response to support communities who have been impacted. In emergencies like this, families will urgently need relief including food, shelter, clean water, and sanitation.
