News Alert: Myanmar Crisis

More than 100 people, including children, were killed Saturday March 27 in Myanmar, bringing the total loss of life from political violence since February 1, 2021 to over 400. 

Mercy Corps Asia Regional Director Alan Glasgow issued the following statement:

“We are appalled and saddened by the senseless loss of life in Myanmar. The tragic course of the crisis portends a deeply worsening humanitarian situation. We urgently need an end to the unconscionable violence and human rights violations.

“Mercy Corps is closely monitoring political developments in Myanmar; the uncertainty we face presents serious obstacles to humanitarian response. Our priority focus at this time is the safety and security of our dedicated team members and partners working in Myanmar, as well as the well-being of the people we work with there.”

• Last year Mercy Corps reached over 1 million people in Myanmar, helping farmers increase their productivity and helping communities adapt to the climate crisis, many of whom are the first to be affected by any shocks or changes to the political climate in the country. 
• The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners reported that 328 people had been killed as of Friday, March 26, according to NPR.
