News Alert: UNSC Must Renew Syria Cross-border Resolution
The UN Security Council has until Friday, July 10 to renew a crucial resolution which authorizes the delivery of cross-border aid into Syria.
Mercy Corps Syria Country Director Kieren Barnes says:
"It's absurd and frankly borderline cruel to allow a decision of this magnitude, that is crucial to so many people's survival, to come down to the wire.
"Over the past weeks, the Syrian economy has been in freefall. Practically overnight, any savings a family had were suddenly cut in half, and anything that family might try to buy now costs twice as much, if it's even available for purchase. Hardly anyone is getting enough to eat.
"We need the Security Council to reauthorize the cross-border resolution to allow aid workers full access into northern Syria. If they don't, people will suffer. That's all there is to it."
Last year, Mercy Corps provided assistance to 1.48 million people across Syria. We are supporting those affected by the conflict in both Syria and neighboring countries by providing emergency assistance to meet basic needs, creating safe spaces for youth, increasing economic opportunities and more.
