FCDO Merger an ‘Unmissable Opportunity’ to Tackle Global Crises at Root Cause
Today, as the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is launched, the global organisation Mercy Corps has called for the new department to ensure that peace-building remains at the core of the UK’s humanitarian assistance.
Alexandra Angulo, Mercy Corps’ Interim Executive Director, says:
“The creation of the FCDO comes at a time where the need for the UK to provide world class humanitarian assistance has never been greater. The long-term economic impacts of COVID-19, combined with rising levels of conflict and the climate crisis, is making life immeasurably harder for the most vulnerable communities in the world.
However, while the UK must continue to provide aid to the countries that need it most, we cannot miss this vital opportunity to make the most of the FCDO’s new structure to create real lasting change and tackle crises at their root cause.
It is only through taking a holistic approach to the causes of conflict, poverty and hunger that we can together build a peaceful and prosperous world. We look forward to working closely with the FCDO in helping to realise these ambitions.”
