Mercy Corps Calls for Resolution to Conflict in Sudan
Responding to the escalation of violence in Sudan, Mercy Corps' Deputy Regional Director for Africa, Allison Huggins, says:
"Mercy Corps is deeply concerned about the escalation of violence in Sudan and the impact of fighting on people's lives and livelihoods, especially in Darfur, where suffering has persisted due to 20 years of conflict.
"Although it is too early to assess the humanitarian implications, the country's humanitarian needs are already at an all-time high. This year, an estimated 15.8 million people—roughly one-third of the country's population—require humanitarian assistance due to ongoing conflict, the climate crisis, disease outbreaks, and economic decline. If violence continues, we will face an even worse humanitarian disaster.
"We hope for a speedy and peaceful resolution to the conflict so that humanitarian organizations can continue providing lifesaving assistance to those in desperate need. We also urge all parties to uphold their international humanitarian obligations to protect civilians and humanitarian actors from ongoing hostilities."
